Interventional radiology: new Monte Carlo calculation method

Posted on 15 July 2014

CEA LIST has developed a novel Monte Carlo calculation method to estimate practitioner exposure to radiation (eye and heart doses). The method will be used to integrate a new feature into the em.SIM virtual reality simulator for interventional radiology risk management that CEA LIST developed in 2013 in partnership with esprimed.

emSIM dose au patient

Eye dose can be calculated in just 9 seconds—a task that took 200 hours previously. To this end, a directional attenuation and emission (DAE) algorithm has been developed and integrated into em.SIM, making the results much more reliable.

Ultimately, em.SIM calculations will help assess in real time the radiation-related risks to which healthcare professionals are exposed.
